The gap: The VA does not cover hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for TBI/PTSD as standard care, a full course runs roughly $27,000 out of pocket, and access depends on one of ~170 private/nonprofit-funded TreatNOW Coalition clinics. Psychedelic-assisted therapies (ibogaine, ketamine, psilocybin, MDMA) aren't FDA-approved and aren't covered either, so operators travel abroad to legal-but-unregulated clinics to get them. Stellate ganglion block access remains inconsistent system to system. The VA will also cover other modalities of treatment but there can be red tape barriers and time delays.
Fill the Gap: Direct grants covering an HBOT treatment course, or travel and clinic costs for ibogaine/ketamine therapy. We also cover other alternative modalities like chiropractor care, massage therapy, acupuncture and more.
The gap: presumptive PTSD workers'-comp laws are spreading but vary by state and department, so coverage is inconsistent. The bigger practical gap even where a claim would be covered: officers routinely avoid their department's EAP or in-network care because a diagnosis on record can threaten fitness-for-duty status, firearm carry, or promotion so the care that would actually help is the care they can't afford to be seen getting.
Fill the Gap: a set number of confidential sessions with a therapist or alternative-care provider entirely outside the officer's department system the value isn't the treatment, it's the confidentiality.
This fund plans to fill the gap for firefighters and gold star wives as we partner and research with professionals to learn are what is the biggest need that is being missed.
Our main fund is called Fill the Gap. Its mission is to close the space between what the VA, a department, or a policy actually covers and what it takes to keep our military members and first responders healthy, active, and in the job — funded at no or low cost, so care is never the reason someone has to step away.
Support our mission by volunteering, donating, or spreading awareness to help us expand access to vital treatments for those in need.
